GOOD FOR PLANTS. GOOD FOR THE PLANET.

The difference is IN the dirt

The Deep Root Irrigation System (DRI) was invented in response to the immense amount of water lost to surface irrigation methods in agriculture due to evaporation and run-off. Especially critical in areas of prolonged drought or where ground water supplies are in critical shortage or have been depleted. Traditional surface methods like micro-sprinklers and drip emitters inefficiently apply water on top of the soil, requiring longer irrigation sets and greater amounts of water to sustain plant vitality.

By starting the watering process under ground the award-winning DRI provides a hyper-efficient delivery system of water and nutrients requiring significantly less inputs and less energy for equal and often superior results. Adaptable to most existing surface systems, the DRI can be installed on starts at the time of planting or as a retrofit conversion in more mature vineyards and orchards.

Device Design

The Deep Root Irrigation (DRI) device is designed to be a direct conveyance of water and nutrients, down to the root zone. The premium ¼ inch “spaghetti” tubing that comprises the top of the unit, attaches snugly to the barbed tip of a drip emitter. The specialty soaker hose portion is then buried underground, creating a closed system for direct delivery and storage of water, immune from evaporation. A copper element in the soaker portion also deters root intrusion. Because of its simple design, the DRI can easily convert most existing surface irrigation systems into deep root watering systems.

Wet Pattern

Surface irrigation methods do just that – irrigate the surface of the soil in the hopes that enough water will make its way down to the roots. With the Deep Root Irrigation system, by pushing the water through the conveyance, into the ground and out the soaker hose at a slightly higher rate than the soil can absorb, we are able to create a substantial bulb of saturation WITH LESS WATER that remains suspended at the root zone, available for uptake for a significantly longer time. It is the shape of the wet pattern that it creates, the efficiency with which it’s created and the longevity of the wet pattern in the ground that sets the DRI system apart.

Root Architecture

By delivering water and nutrients directly to the root zone, the Deep Root Irrigation (DRI) system promotes the kind of healthy deep-root architecture that nature intended. Robust tap roots and vibrant feeding roots and root hairs that stretch downward and outward towards the bulb of saturation created by the DRI system. Traditional surface methods promote shallow, lateral root growth, creating an undesirable “pancake” effect just below the surface. But just as training stakes are used above ground to encourage plant or vine growth in a certain direction, the DRI trains roots to look for water deeper below the surface for optimal growth.

Why this System is Superior for Permanent Crops

  • Water savings! Superior application vs utilization rate results in an up to 50% or more reduction in water needed.
  • Less water also means less energy needed to push the water and less wear on pumps.
  • Fertilizers, herbicides and microbials run through the DRI are also taken directly to the root zone, requiring less to do more.
  • Deeper water is cooler water. Cooler water lowers leaf temperatures in excessive heat.
  • Grow MORE acreage with the same amount of water you are currently using.
  • Exceptional control. Dial in the flow rate for optimal delivery and storage of water underground, then duplicate at every tree or vine.
  • The DRI technology allows the creation of a micro-aquafer at each plant. Banked water in a storable, accessible position at the roots.
  • Weed abatement. Less water on the surface means less weeds!
  • Less maintenance. No sprinkler heads or open emitters to calcify and get clogged.
  • And so much more…
“DRI is currently being used on every kind of permanent ag crop in California and is being tested in 5 different continents.”

Drip irrigation revolutionized agriculture in the late 1960’s by efficiently confining water to a specific location near the plant, greatly reducing the amount of water wasted. Now more than 5 decades later, the Deep Root Irrigation (DRI) system provides a monumental upgrade to drip by channeling that water directly underground, reducing even further the amount of water required to achieve equal or often better results.
